As anyone who spends time under the open sky with a kite knows, wind is the lifeblood of our hobby.

But wind speed can be as temperamental as the breeze itself—and it often comes measured in a language that might not be your own.

For my own flying sessions, I am definitely most comfortable thinking in meters per second. It’s what I’ve grown up with and what makes sense to me when I’m out on the field. But I know that for many pilots around the world, that’s not the case. You might be accustomed to knots, miles per hour, or kilometers per hour, depending on where you are or what your background is.

A Unified Tool for Global Flyers

To bridge this gap and keep things simple, I’ve just finished building a new Wind Speed Converter for AERIALIS Kites. It allows you to instantly convert wind speed from any unit into the ones you prefer.

You can seamlessly convert between:

  • Meters per second (m/s)
  • Kilometers per hour (km/h)
  • Miles per hour (mph)
  • Feet per second (ft/s)
  • Knots (kn)

All you need to do is select your starting unit, type in your value, and click the “Convert” button. You’ll get the speed across all these units instantly.

But it doesn’t stop at just the numbers. The tool also calculates the Beaufort scale value for your input and provides a helpful indication of how that specific wind speed typically impacts the environment around you. It’s a great way to gauge what you’re in for before you even head out to the beach.
