And as always when new versions are released the community will hold their breath for a while hoping the new version will work and not mess things up completely.

I’m kind of holding my breath too, but surely I’ve taken precautions in order to make the upgrade to a new version as problem-free as possible.

Perhaps the most challenging is the switch from an old fashioned editor to the new one, the Gutenberg. In fact, this is not just a change of editor. It’s nothing less like a completely new editing experience!

Gutenberg is a take on a new editor for WordPress. It is named after Johannes Gutenberg, who invented a printing press with movable type more than 500 years ago. The current visual editor requires a lot of us to utilize shortcodes and HTML to make things work . Their goal is to make this easier, especially for those just starting with WordPress. They are embracing “little blocks” and hope to add more advanced layout options.

The two editors come with two very different interfaces and a lot of people have disliked the Gutenberg one.

I’ve been using the (beta version of) Gutenberg for several months now, and from not exactly being a fan, I have slowly grown to like it. Yes, it’s a HUGE change from the old editor, and it’s more page builder oriented that will not only let you write your stuff but also take command of the graphic display of your posts and pages.

At first, I couldn’t make it work on my mobile phone, and that was quite a drag. A lot of my blogging is taking place on the go and I’m using my phone for that. So I was really disappointed when it seemed like I was unable to use Gutenberg on my phone. 🙁

However, and I don’t really know if something changed with an upgrade or if I just stumbled upon the solution, now it’s working! Yes, I can blog on the go using Gutenberg! That’s a must for me, and I was very satisfied when I got it to work. 😀

But let’s get back to the major WordPress upgrade

. The release is scheduled for November 19th and as soon as I see that there is a pretty stable release I will upgrade AERIALIS Kites too. …after a complete update of the site! 😉

So let’s all keep our fingers crossed for a smooooth transition on to WordPress version 5.0!
