If you followed my recent exploration on the unique perspective of kite aerial photography over water, you might already know that I embarked on a fresh KAP expedition this past weekend. It had been a full year since I last lifted a camera rig into the sky with a kite, and the excitement to get back into aerial filming and photography was unreal.
There is something truly magical about capturing landscapes from a bird’s-eye perspective using nothing but the power of the wind.
Documenting the Journey: From Parking Lot to Beach Launch
This time around, I wanted to capture more than just the high-altitude aerial shots. I set out to document the entire expedition experience—from the 10 minutes drive and the trek from the parking area down to the beach, to the complete setup phase.
Viewers get an authentic, behind-the-scenes look at unpacking the gear, rigging up the line, and preparing the rig for launch.
Patience on the Beach: Waiting Out the Wind
When everything was finally rigged and ready, nature threw in a classic KAP challenge: the wind was just on the threshold and not quite strong enough to lift the heavy camera rig safely.
While I could have swapped out to a larger or lighter-wind kite, I checked the weather forecast, which indicated an increase in wind speed shortly.
So I decided to exercise some patience and wait it out. Sure enough, the breeze picked up right on schedule, giving me the steady lift needed for a successful launch.
From Mountain of Raw Footage to a 30-Minute Feature
With the camera high in the sky and a ground camera capturing the action below, I ended up with a massive amount of raw video footage. Sorting through hours of clips, organizing the narrative, and editing everything together took considerable time and care.
The end product is a complete, half-hour “mini-documentary” covering every stage of the journey, the technical setup, and the stunning aerial views I captured.
