So equipped with my DJI Mavic Mini and no tripod, I walked from the parking the ten minutes down to the beautiful Paradise Beach where the wind was hitting it spot on, coming undisturbed in from the sea. You can’t go better than that!
The wind was, well, medium plus, at least and I thought a triple vented would be a good choice given the somewhat windy conditions. And the 3xVented delivered! It flew like a charm out there at the other end of the lines. But I was kind of concerned about the wind being a tad too much for the drone.
But what the heck. Let’s give it a go. So I got the drone up into the air and got a feel for how it was holding up in the reasonable strongish winds. After some flying, I was pretty certain that it would work so I put it up there in hover mode and started to record as I picked up the handles of my quad.
Ahhhh! Flying! I could hear the buzzing of the drone trying to hover as stationery as possible behind me while I was carving smooth figures in the air with my kite. Lovely!
I’ve been thinking about how to improve the footage by doing quick shots with the Mini. Normally you have the camera tracking yourself when doing these quick shots. But this way you kind of fly the kite out of frame for a significant number of seconds. So how about having the camera tracking the kite instead?
It was definitely worth a try. So I got the drone up there and checked the kite on the screen. Then I tapped on the record button and grabbed the handles while the drone counted down and started to shoot various quick shots.
So… Did it work?
Yes, it sure did! There is still room for improvement, but having the camera tracking the kite rather than myself surely are a few steps in the right direction!
