I was doing some cleaning up in my basement the other day and I found an old kite kind of hidden away behind a lot of other … stuff. The pink and black bag kinda looked familiar, but the graphics on the bag had faded away during the years. Nevertheless I knew what was inside. A Pro Reactor SUL made by Spectra Sport Kites’ some 30 years ago!
Many years ago, 2000 or 2001, I bought a complete competition set of second hand Reactors. These are kites made in the mid nineties (I think) designed for precision and team flying. As far as I can remember all these kites are super stable in the air, cut razor sharp trajectories, stops on a dime when snap stallen and build up a very significant pull without speeding up much when the wind picks up.
But here I had the Super Ultra Light version, supposed to fly in very, very light winds. Would I be able to fly it in an absolutely windless environment too? You know, like in the indoor riding arena?
Well, definitely worth a try!
So after a little TLC I had the kite ready to fly. I even made a new lineset for flying indoor. A little longer than the sets I normally would use, but I guessed that a pair of flying lines at about four and a half meter or so would work fine in the riding arena.
So having completed the morning duties in the stable, I walked over to the riding arena with my tripod, camera, kite and a brand new pair of lines for an hour or so flying!
