Under the expert guidance of Anders, our Captain, we transform sketches into breathtaking aerial performances. Here’s a peek into how I gear up for the season, ensuring our routines soar seamlessly at events like the Nordic Kite Meeting and Blokhus Windfestival in Denmark

The Creative Process Begins with Anders

Our journey starts with Anders, the mastermind behind our routines. He meticulously crafts each performance, beginning with detailed sketches that map out the flow of kites in the sky. These sketches evolve into a stop-motion animation—a visual blueprint of the routine. Once complete, Anders distributes the animation to all team members, setting the stage for our individual preparation.

Diving into the Routine

My preparation kicks off with a deep dive into Anders’ sketches. I sit down and “read through” them, absorbing the structure and flow of the routine. This step is crucial for understanding the big picture before moving to the dynamic visuals of the stop-motion animation.

Next, I watch the animated routine—over and over again. Repetition is key. I play the animation repeatedly until the sequence starts to stick in my brain, embedding the patterns and transitions in my memory. It’s like learning a dance, but for the sky.

Taking to the Sky with a Quad-Lined Kite

Once I feel confident with the routine in my head, it’s time to take it to the air. I grab a quad-lined kite, my tool of choice for this stage. Why quad-lined? Its total speed control is unmatched. I can fly at a snail’s pace when needed, or even stop and hover mid-air if my brain needs a moment to recall the next move. This flexibility allows me to practice “my” part of the routine solo, getting a true feel for how it plays out in the wind.

Flying alone at this stage is critical. It’s where I translate mental notes into muscle memory, ensuring every turn, loop, and hover feels natural. After some time, everything clicks—the routine becomes second nature, and I’m ready to join the team.

Bringing It All Together

This methodical approach—sketches, animation, solo practice—works like a charm. When we finally meet as a team, each pilot’s preparation pays off. We’re able to assemble the full routine quickly, syncing our kites with precision and flair. The result? A mesmerizing display that captivates audiences.
