After a very rainy Saturday and Sunday morning, there was a little hope to go flying after all. At least according to the weather forecast. The sun would probably come out to play and the winds from the north dying little by little during the day. So… Fingers crossed!
And today my plan was to fly a true stunt kite classic, the T2 Competition Evo Zero by UK-based Aerodynamics. When I started my online kite shop more than twenty years ago, Peter Taylor, Mr. Airdynamics himself, provided me with state-of-the-art sport kites. The Dharma, the Odyssey, the Trancer and, of course, the T2 series. Absolutely fantastic kites, immaculate workmanship, top-notch building material and a great feel!
No, they were definitely not the cheapest kites in town, but you know, when they are as good as new after twenty-five years, we’re talking high quality!
So today I was ready to blow some dust off of my bright yellow T2 Competition Evo Zero and take it for a spin in – hopefully – good conditions.
When I got to the beach it was more wind than I’d expected, very well into the Zero’s upper wind range, but it was supposed to drop, so I decided to give it a go. The location is a bit too restricted to fly the large precision kite using 35-40 meters lines which is the best line length for this type of kite, so I opted for a somewhat shorter set of lines. And soon two lines of 25 meters laid rolled out on the ground, staked down upwind and a kite connected downwind. I was ready to fly!
WOW! What a kite this is! Even in the higher end of its wind range, it’s a blast to fly! Super steady and razor-sharp trajectories! It cuts as razor-sharp 90 degrees corners and if you want it also carves perfect curves in the air at a constant speed.
Yeah, when we’re on to speed. Thanks to this kite’s geometry it carries an almost constant speed no matter where the kite is flying in the wind window. Most kites speed up a little when crossing the power zone, but this maintains its constant speed all the time. Well, pretty much!
